Who is most likely to be involved in a speed related automobile accident in Kansas? How often is speed a factor in accidents across the state? Accident, injury, and fatality rates across Kansas have declined significantly since 1986. In 1986, the state had an accident rate of 4.3 per million miles driven, a fatality rate of 2.6 per 100 million miles, and an injury rate of 1.4 per million miles. By 2016, those numbers had declined to an accident rate of 2.1 per million miles, an injury rate of 1.2 per million miles, and a fatality rate of 1.25 per 100 million miles.
While overall accident rates are declining, excessive speed remains a constant threat to motorists in Kansas. Since 2006, a total of 68,212 accidents were caused by speeding drivers. These Kansas car accident statistics show a total of 1,017 fatalities and 30,080 injuries. Statewide, the number of speed related accidents has declined from 5,753 in 2013 to 4,524 in 2016. Of these, 65 were fatal accidents and 1,368 caused personal injuries.
Younger drivers with less experience are the most likely to be involved in a speed related collision. In 2016, drivers between the ages of 15 and 19 were involved in 1,010 accidents. Of these, 12 were fatal and 311 caused personal injuries.
The next most common demographic involved in speed related crashes were 20-24-year-old drivers. These individuals were involved in 957 collisions that caused 11 fatalities and 283 personal injuries. Based on Kansas car accident statistics, drivers between the ages of 15-24 were involved in 43.5% of all speed related accidents in the state.
There was a nearly 50% decrease between this demographic and the next most common demographic of 25-29-year-old drivers. Drivers within this age range were involved in 549, or 12% of speed related accidents in Kansas. These accidents caused 7 fatalities and 162 personal injuries.
However, the data does show that drivers are slowing down and the trend of speed related accidents may continue to decline. In 2015, there were 5,525 speed related accidents in Kansas, 80 of which were fatality accidents and 1,518 which caused personal injuries. As in 2016, drivers aged 15-24 were the drivers most often involved in a speed related Kansas car accident. In total, these drivers were involved in 2,315 speed related accidents that caused 26 fatalities and 656 personal injuries in 2015.
