What Possible Complications are Associated with Paralysis?

What complications are associated with paralyzing injuries? What impact do these have on the patient's health, ability to work, and overall quality of life? Paralyzing injuries can affect organs and impair respiratory and circulatory function. These complications can develop in the immediate aftermath of an accident or in the years following. When they occur, they can diminish an individual's quality of life and reduce their ability to work. At Brad Pistotnik Law, we have handled many cases involving paralysis and death. These are expert intensive cases that require medical experts, life care experts and economists to help build the case to show how large your damages are.

Complications most commonly arise in the first year after a paralyzing injury. During this period of significant healing, mortality rates are highest. One of the most common causes of death is pulmonary embolism, which can occur in up to 50% of patients. Pulmonary embolisms are closely associated with blood clots, sepsis caused by pneumonia, and urinary tract infections that spread bacteria throughout the body.

Cardiac problems also include autonomic dysreflexia, which results from uncontrolled blood pressure and occurs in about 10% of paralysis cases. This can be caused by activity or infection, and it must be treated immediately. It typically occurs between one and six months post-injury.

It is estimated that up to 94% of individuals who suffer a paralyzing injury experience chronic pain. This typically dissipates over time. However, it can worsen, depending on the location of the injury and the nerves that are affected. One of the most common causes of chronic pain is deep vein thrombosis. This occurs in up to 90% of patients with paralyzing injuries. Another common cause of pain is pressure ulcers, which can occur if the patient is unable to shift in their seat.

Upper body paralysis occurring at or above the C3 vertebrae can cause respiratory problems. Injury within this area limits an individual's ability to breathe, which can cause them to suffocate. In many cases, individuals with these injuries require ventilator assistance to survive. When these or other complications arise, they can change an individual's lifespan, relationships, and ability to perform work-related tasks.
