What are common causes of vehicle recalls? Who is liable for an accident caused by defective components that affect vehicle safety? Vehicles can be recalled for a number of reasons, including defective components and improper manufacturing. When an automobile accident is caused by a defective component or substandard manufacturing that impacts vehicle safety, the vehicle manufacturer, automobile dealer, mechanic who serviced the vehicle, or owner who failed to heed the recall can be held liable for the personal injuries, wrongful deaths, and property damage that result.
From January 2015 to March 2016, 58.1 million vehicles were recalled by vehicle manufacturers over concerns regarding vehicle safety. Vehicles manufactured by Honda had the highest number of recalls at 13.58 million. This was due in large part to the number of Takata airbags installed on vehicles manufactured by the company. Honda was followed by GM, which issued recalls on 10.6 million vehicles, and Toyota, which issued 8.42 million. The least commonly recalled vehicles were manufactured by Hyundai and BMW, which each had 1.57 million vehicles recalled, and Mercedes-Benz/Daimler, which had 1.2 million vehicles recalled.
Nationwide, the number of vehicles recalled by manufacturers has risen sharply since 2011. In 2011, there were approximately 13.8 million vehicles recalled for vehicle safety concerns. That number rose to just under 16.5 in 2012, and just over 20.2 million in 2013. The most significant increase over the past 18 years occurred from 2013 to 2014, when just under 51 million vehicles were recalled. That number rose slightly to 50.26 million in 2015.
The sharp rise in recalls was due in large part to defective Takata airbags. In the second quarter of 2016, these accounted for 89% of recalls. By comparison during the same period, powertrain recalls accounted for 2.8% of the total. Seat belts accounted for 2.3%, and electrical faults accounted for 1.2%.
However, even with the sharp rise in the number of vehicles recalled, compliance rates remain a serious concern. Data from the National Safety Council shows that less than 44% of vehicles that are older than five years old are repaired, as compared to 83% of vehicles less than five years old. In total, just 64% of vehicle owners who had received a recall notice repaired their vehicle. Statistically, this means that more than 18 million vehicles are operating with a known defect that negatively affects vehicle safety.
