What Actions Increase the Risk of Accident or Injuries for Pedestrians

What actions increase the risk of accident or injuries for pedestrians? Are there steps pedestrians can take to protect themselves while they are walking down the road? Pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely to die in an automobile accident than drivers or occupants of passenger vehicles. Pedestrians who take active steps to protect their safety including when, where, and how they walk significantly reduce their risk of serious injury or death.

There were 5,376 pedestrian fatalities recorded in 2015 which translates to roughly one fatality every 90 minutes. That same year, more than 129,000 pedestrians received injuries that required treatment in a hospital emergency room which translates to a rate of nearly one every 7.5 minutes. From 2014 to 2015, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased 9.5%. Overall, pedestrians comprised approximately 15% of all traffic fatalities in the United States in 2015; a rate which has remained unchanged since 2012. In Kansas, 24 pedestrians died in automobile accidents in 2015 and accounted for 6.8% of total car accident fatalities in the state.

Time of day plays a considerable role in risk. The most dangerous times for pedestrians are between the hours of 6pm and 3am. Increased traffic and fading light during these times enhances the risk. 74% of fatalities occur after dark, while 4% occur at dawn and dusk combined. Further, these times become even more dangerous during the weekend when alcohol consumption and increased DUI rates come into play. According to data gathered by the CDC, nearly 48% of pedestrian accidents resulting in death in 2015 involved either an impaired driver or pedestrian. Of pedestrians who died in alcohol related accidents, nearly 34% were intoxicated.

Increasing visibility is one of the most effective methods of preventing a pedestrian injury or wrongful death. Wearing bright clothing and reflective gear along with carrying flashlights at dusk and during the evening significantly reduces the risk of an accident. Pedestrians should also cross at marked intersections and at crosswalks that are controlled by traffic lights. It is also advisable to walk on designated sidewalks and to avoid roads without paths and sidewalks. As the data shows, avoiding alcohol consumption and staying off the road during weekend hours goes a long way towards reducing the risk of serious injury or death.
