How Many Construction Worker Accidents Happen Every Year?

Why do you need a construction accident lawyer? Construction workers across America face some of the deadliest job hazards of any industry. As a construction accident lawyer, Brad Pistotnik represents construction workers who have been injured on the job and the surviving families of those who suffered fatal injuries who often do not realize that they have a survival claim for conscious pain and suffering and a wrongful death claim.

Among the very real risks construction workers face are falls. Falls from high up are the leading causes of serious injury and wrongful death. From 1992 to 2010, 6,858 construction workers died in falls from high places. Over the past decade, the rate of fatalities has remained relatively steady with an average of 360 annual deaths reported. This was nearly four times the rate of construction workers who died after being struck by objects and nearly four and a half times the number of those who died following electrocution. From 2008 to 2010, the rate of fatal falls in construction was 3.2 per 100,000 full-time workers. This rate has remained relatively steady since then. However, the number of workers who are dying in construction trades has also been climbing steadily since 2011. While the statistical odds of suffering a workplace fall steady, an increasing number of construction workers are falling victim to these types of workplace accidents and need the assistance of a construction accident lawyer.

Specialty trade workers including roofers, masons, electricians, crane operators, etc. are at the greatest risk due to the fact that these trades require individuals to work at great heights and with minimal safety equipment. Those at particularly dangerous risk are roofers who have a fatal work injury rate of 39.7 per 100,000 workers in 2015. This was a slight decrease from 46.1 in 2014, however, the 2015 fatality rate for roofers is nearly four times the rate of 9.8 per 100,000 workers recorded for all construction sectors in 2015.

Data collected by BLS in 2014 showed that 261,930 private sector workers missed at least one day of work due to a fall. In terms of workers' compensation and medical costs, these falls resulted in nearly $70 billion in financial losses. The causes of falls on construction sites vary considerably and include inadequate guardrail protection, failing to cover holes and wall openings, unsafe positioning and improper usage of ladders, failing to provide safety harnesses, as well as malfunctioning equipment or safety harnesses.
