Do Car Accidents Cause Spondylolisthesis?

Do car accidents cause spondylolisthesis? Can back injury attorneys pursue compensation for the injury? Traumatic spondylolisthesis can be caused by a car accident. When it happens, back injury attorneys can pursue compensation to help clients recover from the injury. It is a condition that requires prompt treatment as it can lead to paralysis and permanent loss of limb function and mobility.

Understanding the Cause and Risk Factors for Spondylolisthesis

Stress fractures that force vertebrae out of place cause traumatic spondylolisthesis. In an accident, the fracturing of the pedicle, lamina, or facet joints allows for movement of the vertebrae. This movement compresses the nerves and it can compress the spinal canal itself. This can cause numbness, pain, and muscle weakness. The back injury can make sitting uncomfortable and walking difficult.

Elderly drivers, women, and those who are obese are the demographics at greatest risk. It's a common degenerative condition that worsens the older a person becomes. It's often a pre-existing medical condition known as isthmic spondylolisthesis. This is a condition that back injury attorneys can establish was exacerbated by an automobile accident. It's estimated that between 5 to 7% of people have isthmic spondylolisthesis. This is a small fracture within the spine, often between the L5-S1 vertebrae that is often undiagnosed. This is sometimes discovered when blunt force trauma occurs and pushes the vertebrae out of position.

Treatments for Spondylolisthesis

Spondyloisthesis injuries are rated progressively between Grade 1 and Grade V. A Grade 1 slip is up to 25%. This rises by 25% for each grade. Lower grade injuries typically involve bed rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications. In higher degrees of injury, spinal surgery can be required to correct the deformity. This can include surgery to stabilize the spine, or surgery to fuse the vertebrae in position. If fusion is required, most patients recover within three to six months of the operation. In all cases, the severity of the injury, the age of the individual, and the individual's overall health are factors that determine whether or not a full recovery can occur.
