Are pickup trucks safer to drive than passenger cars? Which vehicles are at greatest risk of rolling over and causing a fatality in a pickup truck accident? The fact is that pickups are safer than many passenger vehicles, but the risk of fatality is not nonexistent. The data also shows that the larger the truck, the greater the risk for drivers operating these vehicles to have a fatal accident.
In 2016, 37,461 people died in motor vehicle collisions. This was an increase of nearly 2,000 over the 35,485 who died in 2015. Of those who died in 2015, 12,761 were occupants of passenger cars which rose 5.1% to 13,412 in 2016. In 2015, 9,878 were occupants of light trucks which rose 4.3% to 10,302 in 2016. Of all motor vehicle fatalities, pickups had the lowest rate of increase. This is not because of a decrease in sales of pickups which remained steady during this period, but rather because of new safety features which made trucks safer than previous model years.
For each year from 2012 to 2015, small 4-wheel drive pickup trucks had a fatality rate of 22 per one million registered vehicles years. During the same period, large and very large pickups had a fatality rate of 27 per one million registered vehicle years, and for 2-wheel drive pickups, the rates were 24 per one million vehicle years, 25 for large 2-wheel drive trucks, and 28 for very large 2-wheel drive pickup trucks.
Rollovers are a common cause of pickup truck fatalities. In 2014, small and large 4-wheel drive pickups had fatality rates of 5 per one million registered vehicle per year. This rose to 9 for both very large 4-wheel and 2-wheel trucks. Large 2-wheel drive trucks had a fatality rollover rate of 3 per one million registered vehicle per year. The stats show that the larger the truck, the greater the risk of having a fatal rollover accident.
By comparison, passenger vehicles had significantly higher fatality rates that averaged 39 per million registered vehicles per year. Miniature 4-door passenger vehicles had the highest driver fatality rate at 87, and a single vehicle rollover rate of 11 which was more than double the average for passenger vehicles. Small cars had a fatality rate of 43 per one million registered vehicle per year, and midsize vehicles had a rate of 39.
