Google Maps, Apple Maps and Dashboard Navigation Systems Wrecks

Does the use of Google Maps, Apple Maps and dashboard navigation systems cause drivers to have accidents because they have stopped using the entorhinal cortex? Why are bad car wrecks occurring all over Wichita, Kansas and the U.S.? There have been many recent rear end collisions occurring in Wichita on K-96, I-235, I-135, US Highway 254, US Highway 50 and US Highway 400. There is a significant uptick in the amount of rear end collisions occurring in Wichita and around the State of Kansas on these busy highways. After studying why wrecks occur for most of my adult life and believing that drunk drivers were the leading cause of accidents I found many studies that show that people using cell phones and texting, dialing, answering phone calls and most importantly, using GPS map functions such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, SIRI and on-board dashboard navigation systems and other mapping services are likely culprits for causing tractor-trailer actions, semi-accident, motor vehicle accidents, car wrecks, motorcycle wrecks, pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents, rear end collisions and sideswipe collisions. Why? Because people stopped using their entorhinal cortex capabilities of their brains and they have begun turning off certain portions of the brain to rely on a map and voice to tell them where to go, turn, drive and stop.

Many of the drivers that we take depositions of in car wreck cases end up finally admitting that they were looking at their GPS on their phone and were looking down when they ran into the back of another car. I recently had a delivery driver come to my office to deliver a sandwich and this particular driver had been to Brad Pistotnik Law on many prior occasions to deliver sandwiches. The restaurant that delivers the food is only approximately 1 mile from our office.

One day, one of the drivers called me and asked where our office was and I asked his name. He said his name was Mohamed. Having had Mohamed deliver sandwiches to me for several months I asked him how he was lost and where he was. He told me that he was at 21st St. near Amidon, in West Wichita which is 20 miles out of the way on the wrong side of the city. I asked him if he was using his mapping function since he was completely on the wrong side of town and apparently forgot to put in the words “north” and “east” so his GPS map took him to the opposite side of the city. I gave him a short set of directions to get back to our office and told him to simply turn around and head east so that he can come back to 10111 E. 21st St. N., Suite 204, Wichita, KS 67206 where the law firm of Brad Pistotnik Law exists and is located. When Mohamed came back to the correct address I asked him why he was lost and how it was possible that he did not know where my office was since he had been to the correct location on multiple occasions delivering sandwiches. It became clear at that moment that drivers are being reprogrammed to turn off the portion of their brain that allows them to follow directions and to find locations by using Google Maps and other navigational systems on dashboards.

Wondering if I was correct, I began researching the Internet to determine what part of the brain helps us with navigation and directions. I learned that there was a study where the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine went to John O’Keefe who won the Nobel Prize because he discovered “place cells” in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the brain’s region that is most associated with memory. This study found that these particular types of place cells activate whenever a human being moves into a specific location and that groups of those “place cells” form an actual map of our environment. O’Keefe (from the University of London) shared the prize with two of his former students by the name of Edvard Moser and May-Britt Moser. These two students were studying at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience in Norway. These two students discovered “grid cells” which are located in the entorhinal cortex which is an area adjacent to the hippocampus. Their study concluded that grid cells are akin to and have been called the brain’s GPS system. The hypothesis is that these grid cells tell each human being where you are located at relative to where you started from and help with directions in the human brain to find locations.

In addition to “place cells” and “grid cells” there is another type of brain cell which is called “head-direction cells.” These are also found in the entorhinal region. It is believed that these specialized neurons enable navigation in humans.

There was another team of researchers from the University College of London who were led by Hugo Spiers who performed a study utilizing 16 volunteers to try to familiarize themselves with a virtual environment which was made out of a square courtyard with a landscape similar to a forest or mountain. As the researchers proceeded with their study they scanned all of the participants’ brains while showing them different views from the environment. They then asked them to try and determine in which direction different objects lay. This brain scan study showed that there was a distinct pattern of activity in the entorhinal region of the brain. These researchers concluded that the same pattern appeared whether the volunteers were facing one specific direction or just thinking about a direction. The finding suggested to the researchers that the same mechanism that signals directions also simulates goal direction. This same study found that the participants’ goal-direction signals helped the participant correctly recall which direction the target object led to sand provided a basis for showing differences in navigational ability.

The entorhinal cortex is an area of the brain which is located in the medial temporal lobe which is interior to the rhino sulcus and helps to function as a hub in your brain and acts as a widespread network for memory, navigation and perception of time.

There appears to be a very probable relationship between the use of modern cell phone mapping and GPS which in turn may make the driver turn off the use of the entorhinal cortex along with the use of grid cells, place cells and head-direction cells. Most of the research that is being undertaken presently is being performed by neuropsychologists and neuro-cognitive scientists who are studying Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

I have a hypothesis that as Google Maps and Apple Maps and other modern cell phone technology and dashboard navigational systems develop that more and more mapping technology will cause drivers to cease using the portion of their brain which includes the grid cells, place cells and head-direction cells receives stimulation. This, in turn make cause atrophy in the entorhinal cortex.

As drivers turn off their brain and cease using the portions of the internal brain that help to perform every day navigation and direction finding perhaps the technology companies will learn that pavlovian stimuli training making phone customers use directional mapping will ultimately lead to a much higher nationwide accident level for car wrecks. Drivers now turn off their brain and ignorantly rely on a voice to tell them where to turn and stop.

We represent a lot of motor vehicle accident injury victims who have been injured in truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, semi-accidents, rear-end collisions, pedestrian-vehicle accidents and have seen a significant increase in the number of rear end collisions as Google Maps and dashboard navigational maps became more in use.

I routinely advise motorcyclists that if they are to get on another motorcycle they need to realize that people are not looking in front of them and paying attention to the roadway any longer. They are deeply embedded in their cell phone usage and listening to the map tell them where to go and where to stop and where to turn. This blind allegiance to cell phones and mapping technology appears to be creating more and more motor vehicle accidents by people who stop paying attention to anything other than the directions on the phone. The entorhinal cortex may be atrophied out of our brains over time.

A few months ago I was riding with a driver and we were in an area near the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport where there are many on-ramps and overhead highways that rise over and above each other and the driver of the car asked me why I had turned on my video function on my cell phone. I calmly replied that it was to video record that he was looking down at his phone map function so when we were both killed in a car crash, someone will know why we were killed and how the accident occurred. This person was one of the lawyers in my office who was driving a rental vehicle while in a busy maze of highways where the cell phone said get into the right lane then merge into the left lane and then the directions would reverse because the instructions through Google Maps was not sufficiently plotted out because of the rapid highway construction changing the latitude and longitude of the various road parts.

What does this mean to personal injury accident victims? It means that you have to be aware that everyone in the universe is using their cell phone instead of paying attention to driving and keeping a proper lookout. It means your chances of being killed while riding a motorcycle and being lawfully stopped in a roadway where you have an approaching driver looking down at their cell phone mapping function creates an increased likelihood that you may die or become severely injured. I represented a minister and his daughter earlier last year and they were on one of the highways in Wichita and were stopped when another driver rear-ended them at over 50 to 60 mph. I believe that other driver admitted to looking down at his phone just before impact.

When human beings stop reading and stop using their brain and listen only to directions from a telephonic cell phone computer telling them where to go and what to do, the chance of society having increased death and morbidity and car accidents rises drastically. The cell phone and dashboard maps in cars will ultimately lead to an increased accident rate that will be shown by future studies.

Protect yourself by always looking to the front, to the side and especially behind you and leaving a cushion of space in front of you in the next car so that when the rapidly approaching vehicle coming up from behind you with a driver looking at his map on his phone or dashboard mapping system leaves you enough cushion space to move and evade the driver looking down at his phone.
