The Holidays are supposed to be a time for gatherings with family and friends. However, the Holidays can also be a time for an unexpected tragedy. Thanksgiving to Christmas is the most dangerous time to be on the roads. There are numerous factors besides Holiday travel that lead to the increase in the number of accidents. People are rushing around to buy Christmas presents and be the first to arrive for the “big sale”. If you have been shopping on Black Friday, you know exactly how crazy the parking lots and streets are around the shopping malls. During the Holiday season there are numerous Christmas parties and work events to attend. Daylight savings time is over and get its darker much earlier in the evening reducing the visibility in parking lots and on the roads. Large parts of the country also see a significant amount of snow and ice this time of year making the roads even more dangerous.

The most traveled Holiday period of the year is Thanksgiving weekend. DUI arrests are the at their highest level between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Thanksgiving Eve has even become known as “Black Wednesday” as it is one of the busiest nights of the year for bars.

According to American Automobile Association, in 2013 over 95 million Americans hit the road to travel to see their loved ones over the Holiday seasons. During this time approximately 27,900 Americans were involved in accidents resulting in more than 250 deaths. Statistics published by the National Safety Council reveal that during the New Year’s Holiday, the amount of related deaths due to auto accidents significantly increases. This is due to the amount of alcoholic beverages consumed during this Holiday. Between the years of 2007 and 2011 it was estimated that 42% of auto deaths were due to drinking and driving. If a Holiday typically falls in the middle of the week the number of related deaths due to automobile accidents decrease as opposed to when they fall over the weekend. This year New Year’s Eve falls on a Sunday so the Friday and Saturday before New Year’s Eve will also be an extremely dangerous time to be on the road.

The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol and Abuse and Alcoholism has reported that 40% of motor vehicle deaths during Christmas and New Year’s involve drunk drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data indicates that in 2010 over 2,500 people died in motor vehicle accidents during the month of December. The NHTSA also calculated that an average of 36 alcohol related deaths occur each day and this number jumper to 45 per day during the Christmas Holiday and to 54 per day over the New Year’s Holiday.
