How Much Do Car Crashes Cost Kansans Each Year?

How much do car crashes cost Kansans each year? What compensation can a personal injury attorney in Kansas pursue to help accident survivors recover from their injuries? Kansas utilizes Federal Highway Administration guidelines to estimate the total cost of traffic accidents in the state. These calculations take into account the cost of medical care, as well as compensation for lost wages, lost earning capacity, property damage, etc. Accident costs add up quickly and are higher than most people realize. In Kansas, the state estimates that each person potentially injured suffers approximately $31,850 in damages, while those who suffer a disabling injury experience a cost of $301,313. For those who suffer a fatality, the state estimates the overall cost at $4,352,297. I personally do not believe in averages since each case is different. We review our own case statistics and find a wide array of different medical costs, lost wages and other damages like pain and suffering, disability and related types of injuries.

In 2016, costs stemming from accidents that involved driving infractions such as speeding, following too closely, and failure to yield were the most costly. The total 38,409 of these types of accidents caused just under $2.12 billion dollars. Among these, accidents involving speeding motorists accounted for 4,472 accidents that created a cost of just under $457 million. Accidents involving aggressive/reckless drivers accounted for 1,344 accidents that created a cost of slightly under $170.2 million. There were 6,407 accidents caused by criminal actions including fleeing police, driving stolen vehicles, and hit and run drivers. These caused a total of $189.35 million in damages.

Single-vehicle accidents with no pedestrian involvement were the next most common type of accident. In total, there were 26,254 single-vehicle accidents that caused $1.2 billion in associated costs. Low-light conditions were a common and costly contributing factor to automobile accidents in 2016. In total, there were 22,206 accidents in low-light situations. These generated a total cost of $1.19 billion.

In terms of injuries and fatalities alone, the personal cost of an overturned vehicle is considerably higher than other types of motor vehicle accidents. In 2016, the financial cost of vehicle overturns was also considerably higher per accident. At $1.06 billion, it was less than the top three causes, however, this number was generated from just 3,844 accidents. This was a significantly higher cost than the $820 million in costs generated by the 16,785 accidents caused by distracted drivers. Finally, there were 1,087 accidents involving mopeds, motorcycles, and scooters that created a cost of $327.7 million dollars. Automobile accident attorneys can help their clients pursue compensation to cover costs related to any type of accident.
