How Many Uninsured Motorists Are On The Road?

How many uninsured motorists are on the road? Is it legal to operate a motor vehicle without proper insurance? It is estimated that approximately 13% of motorists drive without automobile insurance coverage. In Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Missouri, and Illinois, it is mandatory for drivers to maintain insurance on their automobile.

The only state that does not require motorists to carry insurance is New Hampshire, which has an uninsured motorist rate of 9.9%. From 2003 to 2010, the rate of uninsured motorists there declined. However, since 2010 the numbers have steadily trended upwards, which increases the risk for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and other motorists.

The number of uninsured motorists on American roads remains high. While the rate remained steady at 13% from 2014 to 2015, the number of uninsured motorists has crept steadily upwards since 2010. Roughly one in every eight drivers does not have coverage for accidents they may be responsible for under Kansas accident liability laws. Florida had the highest rate of uninsured drivers at nearly 27%, while Nebraska had 6.8%, Illinois had 13.7%, Texas had 14.1%, and Missouri had 14%. Oklahoma had a rate of 10.5%, which is high, but was 15% lower than the number recorded in 2012.

For comparison, approximately 7% of drivers in Kansas are uninsured. When one of these drivers is involved in an accident, Kansas accident liability law allows individuals to file claims against their own uninsured/underinsured insurance policy. Kansas law requires motorists to carry automobile insurance coverage on their vehicle. Failure to carry proper coverage can result in fines and other penalties, including license suspension or imprisonment.

Nationwide, the average value of an uninsured motorist claim is $20,000. While there are many reasons drivers choose not to secure coverage, these reasons do not excuse them from their legal liability. When an uninsured motorist is involved in an automobile accident that causes property damage, personal injuries, or a wrongful death, they can be held liable under Kansas accident liability law for the expenses caused by their negligence. We always recommend that you carry a minimum of $250,000.00 per person and $500,000.00 per accident for bodily injury liability and maintain equal limits of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
