How Deadly is it to Drive or Ride on an All Terrain Vehicle

atv accidents

How deadly is it to drive or ride on an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV)? Do these vehicles provide adequate protection for those who use them for work or play? There are millions of ATV's registered in the United States and each year ATV accidents cause hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries. The reality is that using these "fun" toys risks being anything but enjoyable. Brad Pistotnik Law is an ATV accident lawyer who can pursue compensation to help victims recover from their injuries. We are also motorcycle accident attorneys, truck accident attorneys, abogados and lawyers and car accident attorneys, lawyers and abogados.

There are approximately 10.5 million households in the US that have owned an ATV. Approximately 228,000 new ATV's were sold in 2016. From 1982 to 2016, 14,653 people died in ATV accidents. The good news is that the estimated number of fatalities has declined over the past three years from 581 in 2014, to 484 in 2015, and down to 337 in 2016.

Children are especially at risk of suffering injury or death while using an ATV. As of 2016, 3,232, or 22%, of the fatalities recorded since 1982 were children under the age of 16. Broken down further, 1,411 of these were children under the age of 12. Of those who died from 1982 to 2013, 158 were in Kansas. In 2016, 10 people were killed in ATV accidents.

ATV's pose a considerable risk of personal injury. In 2016 alone, there were more than 101,200 individuals treated in emergency rooms for ATV injuries. This was an increase of 4% over the 97,200 recorded in 2015. Of those who are injured, roughly 26% were children under the age of 16. Approximately 86% of these injuries involve broken bones, bruises, concussions, and other injuries that don't require hospitalization. However, 14% of those injured suffer more serious injuries including internal bleeding, deep lacerations, and traumatic brain injuries.

Of recorded injuries in 2016, 22,700 were contusions and abrasions, 28,200 were bone fractures, 11,500 were lacerations, and 12,200 were sprains and strains. That same year, a total of 8,600 internal organ injuries were recorded. Overall, 27,400 head and neck injuries were recorded. 20,500 were injuries to the torso, 22,200 were leg injuries, and 29,500 were arm injuries. These statistics demonstrate which parts of the body are most at risk of suffering injury and they highlight the importance of adhering to helmet laws which require operators and passengers under the age of 18 to wear helmets while using an ATV.
