How Dangerous is a Spin on Motorcycle?

How dangerous is it to take a ride on a motorcycle or moped? What are the most common types of injuries suffered in accidents involving motorcycles and mopeds? While there are far fewer motorcycle and moped accidents in Kansas than automobile crashes, motorcyclists are at greater risk of serious injury or death when an accident occurs. This is because careless drivers are using texting and mapping on their cell phones which causes them to look down and way from the road.

In 2015, there were 61,844 crashes in Kansas. Of these, 999 involved motorcycles, and 83 involved mopeds/motor scooters. Accidents involving motorcycles or mopeds in 2015 caused 56 fatalities and 935 injuries. From 2006 to 2015, the state recorded a total of 11,594 motorcycle crashes, and 958 moped crashes in Kansas. These have caused 525 fatalities and 11,275 personal injuries.

Nationwide, there were 5,286 motorcyclist fatalities in 2016. Per 100,000 registered motorcycles, the fatality rate was 60.9. In 2015, there were 88,000 injuries reported, which gave motorcycles an injury rate of 1,028 per 100,000 registered motorcycles. For comparison, the fatality rate per 100,000 vehicles for light trucks in 2015 was 7.7, and 9.48 for passenger cars. Fatality rates for motorcyclists are rising at an alarming rate. From 2000 to 2014, the number of motorcyclist fatalities increased by 58%. As traffic congestion increases and motorcyclists share increasingly crowded roads, it is expected that the rates of injuries and fatalities in Kansas and across the country will continue to rise.

Common injuries for individuals represented by a bodily injury lawyer following a motorcycle accident include Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), spinal cord injuries, bone fractures, and "road rash." These injuries can lead to permanent disfigurement and long-term neurological impairment, as well as amputation or permanent loss of limb function. A bodily injury lawyer in Kansas can help clients recover compensation to help treat and recover from these injuries. In 2010, the CDC estimated that the cost of treatment, lost productivity, and lost wages following motorcycle accidents was upwards of $12 billion per year. Of significant note, riders who don't wear helmets are twice as likely to experience traumatic brain injuries and have healthcare costs that can be as much as 13 times higher than riders who were wearing a helmet at the time of their accident.
